Hansel and Gretel is a German folk tale by the Brothers Grimm: Jacob and Wilhelm. A dark tale, originally written for adults, it has been softened and revised and is now generally regarded as child's fairy tale.

At it's core, the tale is about heroic children in harrowing circumstances. Its themes derive from the universal fears of childhood: abandonment, isolation and monsters. The tale is similar to many such tales known throughout Europe for centuries. This commonality, especially among the peoples living on the edge of the vast European forests during the desperate and fearful times of the middle ages, suggests a larger, shared experience that transcends nationality and culture.
