I am available for private tutoring in the Greater Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and surrounding areas) located in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Appointment scheduling is flexible, encompassing mornings (ideal for homeschoolers), afternoons or evenings. Meeting places can be your home (preferably), mine or a neutral site such as a library. Sessions are usually one-on-one, but in appropriate situations, groups of up to 3 students can work well. In these cases, group discount rates will be offered.
Rates for one-on-one private tutoring are as follows:
• $60/hr for elementary, middle and high school students
• $65/hr for college students
• $70/hr for graduate students
Payment is due at the end of the session.
The First Meeting - What to Expect
A portion of our first meeting will be devoted to understanding where the student is coming from, where he or she wishes to go, and how he or she will get there.
The first step in the tutoring process is to meet with the student, and if need be, the parents, to determine what the student feels are his or her needs. We also discuss the roles each interested party will fulfill, and what is expected from each of us.
2. Student Assessment
During my discussion with the student, I will try to determine the student's level of proficiency in the subject area. I typically accomplish this through an informal question and answer process. I may also ask to see work the student has done in the past.
3. Determine Needs
Once I have an understanding of the student's proficiency level, I can determine a starting point and the areas where we will concentrate our study efforts.
4. Develop Plan
Now that we know where we're starting and where our emphasis will be placed, we will decide on the frequency and duration of meetings, and the amount of time and work required of the student outside of the tutoring sessions. We will also set milestones along the way to effectively gauge our progress.
5. Continuous Assessment
During the tutoring process, we will continuously assess our progress with relation to the tutoring plan and adjust our plan accordingly. This ensures that everyone is in agreement with our progress, and that there are no surprises along the way.
